The mind is indeed a terrible thing to waste, and  the minds of too many young African Caribbean people are being wasted in jail.

Guiding Light Leads ( GLL) seeks to address this problem in a positive way. As per the 2011 census for England and Wales, the African Caribbean population is less than 1%, the total black population is 3% and yet of the population in jail they represent 13%.

How do you stop the mind from being wasted?

ENGAGE IT!

GLL has innovative programmes on the history of the African-Caribbean to take to the schools and colleges to engage the minds.

A West African proverb states:

“If you don’t know where you are going at least you know where you are coming from, retrace your steps.”

It is knowing where you are coming from that gives you your sense of direction to push hard for success and the African Caribbean has lost that, we need to find it. We ned to remember where we are coming from.

“TO BE IGNORANT OF WHAT OCCURRED BEFORE YOU WERE BORN IS TO REMAIN ALWAYS A CHILD. FOR WHAT IS THE WORTH OF HUMAN LIFE, UNLESS IT IS WOVEN INTO THE LIFE OF OUR ANCESTORS BY THE RECORDS OF HISTORY.”

GLL will use the history of the African Caribbean people in interactive innovative exciting ways to remind the young minds of their potential.

The education of  African- Caribbean history will highlight our unique history, the power of the mind to sustain difficulties and overcome. Educating the mind on the fortitude and resilience of a unique people will reinstate a sense of place and re-establish a sense of identity, of self-worth and of pride in self which will in turn generate the mind-set to establish higher goals.
